Fishless August

DCIM100GOPRO Bryan hooks up on a nice cutthroat[/caption]   I got a text from Bryan that read ” Wanna fish tomorrow? I haven’t caught a fish in August!” I immediately replied with “unacceptable! Let’s go” [caption id="attachment_4103" align="aligncenter" width="640"]image2 copy 3 Cutthroat[/caption] I decided to take Bryan to a place that I discovered earlier this summer that has been a fun place to fish. It’s a river that has plunge pools, pockets and long deep runs. This stream has a lot of fish that are eager to take a fly. In the past we’ve caught brook trout, cutthroat, rainbow and grayling. I figured this would be the place for Bryan to catch his first fish in August. [caption id="attachment_4100" align="aligncenter" width="640"]DCIM100GOPRO Cutthroat and brook trout[/caption] We got a late start and didn’t get to the river until about 3pm. Quite different from our early a.m departures. We figured we could find a late afternoon/evening hatch at some point during our time on the water. The first stretch of river finally produced a fish for Bryan. August was not fishless any longer. The pressure was off!!! image4 Bryan began catching cutthroat and brook trout pretty regularly. We then began making our way upstream and fishing all of the likely looking spots. This piece of water is pretty technical and requires short casts. Even bow and arrow casts are needed in certain situations. The later it got the better the fishing was. Bryan even caught his first grayling ever!!!! We reflected on the day on our way back to the car. Another fun day on the water!!!!!]]>
