Orvis Guide Rendezvous

Possibly The Largest Gathering of Fly Fishing Guides on Earth Every April we guides get to attend the annual Orvis Guide Rendezvous (OGR).  This is where Orvis endorsed fly fishing guides and the Orvis company get together for three days of meetings and activities.  The meetings have been in various locations over the years, including Cody WY., Casper WY., Bozeman MT., and this year will be the third year in a row in Missoula MT. The rendezvous includes information to help us improve our guiding skills.  We learn about habitat projects Orvis is assisting with and updates about endangered fish.  There is a guide best practices panel where key people in the industry, including the Orvis guides and outfitters of the year, answer questions about guiding, hospitality, how to handle certain situations, etc..  Orvis presents its latest products and gear, which we get to practice with, and they welcome any feedback about improving existing equipment. Orvis provides casting instruction for the guides and even films our casts to show areas in need of improvement.   And of course there is the guide olympics.  This fun activity involves casting accuracy, quick rod, reel, and line assembly, drift boat floatation toss, fly placement contests, etc.  We get a chance to watch the latest fly fishing films and a banquet honors the guides, outfitters, and lodges of the year. The OGR is also an opportunity for our Falcon’s Ledge guides to get together, plan our season, and cover information pertaining to our lodge.  And we always make time to fish the local rivers in Montana.  This year’s OGR is the first week in April and we are excited to get out of town and surround ourselves in everything fly fishing.  Our head guide and fishing manager, Spencer Higa, put together the following video from last year’s OGR.  Enjoy!
