Fly Fishing Quick Tip – Choosing a Fly Rod

2014-04-12_20.37.34 1- 2 and 3 weight rods are used for very small streams where fish are small.  These rods are light weight and sensitive making them perfect for small streams.  They usually are sold in 7′ 6″ to 9′ length.  If the streams you fish are overgrown with lots of vegetation you will want to buy a 7′ 6″ rod, if the streams you fish are more open you can go with a longer length rod. 2- 4 weight rods are great for large streams and small rivers.  These rods are hefty enough to cast a little further and handle a slightly bigger fish.  This is a great size rod if you fish a lot of small rivers or big streams.  It is a perfect rod for fish ranging in size from 12 to 18 inches. 3- 5 weight rods are a great all-around rod for most anglers.  These rods are strong enough to handle most river situations and nearly any trout you can catch in a river.  They are light enough to use on a small river, but hefty enough to make long casts on a large river and handle big fish.  This is a great size rod to start with if you are just getting into fly fishing and like to fish rivers. 4- 6 weight rods are good rods for big rivers and stillwater trout fishing.  This size rod has a stiff, strong backbone and is great for making long casts on large rivers and stillwaters.  They are also strong enough to handle the big trout that you can hook into on these large waters.  These rods are also great for windy days on lakes and big rivers, to give you the strength to cast through the wind. 5- 7 and 8 weight rods are great if you fish for big, hard-fighting species such as redfish, carp, steelhead, and some salmon.  If you are planning on fishing for large fish over 10 pounds on a regular basis then you probably want to purchase a 7 or 8 weight rod.  This is especially true if you are planning on fishing for fish species that are notorious for their strength and fight. 6- 9 and 10 weight rods are used for really big, hard-fighting fish.  These rods are often used when fishing for salmon and saltwater fly fishing.   Common species of fish that these rods are used for are king salmon, tarpon, and other large saltwater species.
