August fishing has been amazing around Falcon’s Ledge.  The streams and rivers surrounding the lodge have been active with hungry trout rising to grasshoppers, ants, and beetles.  The lakes around the Falcon’s Ledge Lodge and nearby lakes have also been fishing very good for bass.  In this blog we will discuss our five favorite patterns for fishing terrestrials during the late summer and early fall.

The Parachute Madam X (PMX) is one of our favorite patterns to fish in August and September.  The PMX fly is a very effective pattern for imitating grasshoppers and is one of our favorite patterns to use during the late summer and early fall.  The colors that we use most often are olive and royal and in sizes 12 and 14.  Trout love this pattern and we use it on many of the streams and rivers that we fish in northern Utah.

The Parachute Hopper is another great pattern for the summer and fall months.  This pattern is very versatile and can be tied in olive, tan, and yellow in sizes 12 and 14.  Streams and rivers that have grasshoppers along the banks are common during August and September in northern Utah, and throwing a parachute hopper along grassy river banks is very effective to catch trout during this time of year.

Lightning bugs are an effective nymph pattern throughout the summer, and especially during the late summer and early fall.  These flashy silver-colored nymphs are great at representing caddis larvae.  Dropping lightening bugs off of a hopper pattern is a very effective technique for catching trout during the months of August and September.

Frog and mouse poppers are fun to fish during August and September and very effective for large brown trout and bass.  During this time of year brown trout and bass are active in ponds, lakes, and backwater areas and large bends of rivers and streams.  Casting frog and mouse poppers into these areas and popping them along the surface will trigger brown trout and bass to attack these poppers.  These violent takes are some of the most aggressive and fun fly fishing we do all year.

Woolly buggers are always an effective pattern for trout and bass, but the fall months are a great time to fish this pattern.  It is a very versatile pattern and can be tied in white, brown, black, and olive to represent minnows, leeches, and damselfly nymphs.  It is a great pattern to fish in rivers, ponds, and lakes.  It is a great pattern for aggressive brown and brook trout and bass in the fall months.

We hope to see you this fall at Falcon’s Ledge for some fun fall fishing!
