Early spring in Utah is a special time for anglers seeking adventure and tranquility at Falcon’s Ledge. Nestled in the Uinta Mountains, Falcon’s Ledge is renowned for its beautiful scenery, abundant wildlife, and premium fly-fishing experiences. As the snow begins to melt and the days grow longer, the lakes and streams around Falcon’s Ledge awaken, offering unique opportunities for both novice and experienced fishermen.  This year the winter has been mild and early spring fishing will start the end of February on most of our rivers and lakes.  The bird hunting season is open until the end of March and this year is a great year to get out in March and do some fishing and bird hunting.

Falcon’s Ledge boasts eight private lakes and half a dozen nearby streams brimming with healthy rainbow, cutthroat, brook, and tiger trout. Early spring fishing offers several advantages:

  • Active Fish: As water temperatures rise, trout become more active, searching for food after a long winter.
  • Less Crowded: Fewer anglers mean more peaceful settings and better chances at prime fishing spots.
  • Spectacular Scenery: Snow-capped peaks and budding trees provide a breathtaking backdrop for your fishing adventure.

During early spring, water temperatures can be cool, often ranging from the high 30s to low 50s °F. Trout are found in shallower water, especially near the edges where the sun warms the banks and aquatic insects begin to hatch. Fish are hungry and respond well to slow-moving flies and lures that mimic natural food sources.

Recommended Gear and Setup

  • Rod and Reel: A 5-6 weight fly rod with floating line is versatile for lakes and streams.
  • Flies: Early spring favorites include woolly buggers, leech patterns, chironomids, and egg patterns. Nymphing is often effective during this season.
  • Leaders: Use longer leaders (9-12 feet) with lighter tippet (4X-5X) to help present flies delicately in clear water.
  • Clothing: Layer up! Mornings can be chilly, but afternoons warm quickly. Waterproof waders and boots are essential.

Techniques for Success

  1. Slow Retrieve: Fish are less aggressive in cold water; slow down your presentations to entice strikes.
  2. Focus on Shallows: Target shallow areas where insects hatch and trout feed actively.
  3. Watch for Hatches: Keep an eye out for early-season midge or mayfly hatches and switch to dry flies when you see surface activity
  4. Experiment: Try different fly patterns and depths until you find what the fish are responding to.
