Before the spring runoff begins, Utah offers exceptional fly-fishing opportunities. Rivers and streams are generally clearer and more accessible, with fish actively feeding in anticipation of changing water conditions. Popular spots such as the Provo River, Weber River, and Green River drainage on the south slope of the Uintah Mountains are prime locations for pre-runoff action.
Anglers should focus on nymphing techniques, as aquatic insects are a primary food source during this period. Flies such as stonefly nymphs, mayfly patterns, and midges are particularly effective. It’s important to monitor weather and water levels, as runoff can start quickly, impacting accessibility and clarity. Here are a handful of our favorite pre-runoff flies to use in the early spring in Utah.
- Spanish Bullet Perdigon – This is a great fly for pre-runoff fishing and works well year-round as it looks like midge larvae as well as small caddis larvae that are common in most Utah rivers.
- Zebra Midge – The zebra midge is a very effective fly year-round and is one of our favorite midge patterns. The zebra midge works great in early spring and can be used as the dropper in a dry/dropper rig or on a nymph rig.
- Blue-winged Olive (BWO) – Blue-winged Olive mayflies are common on most Utah rivers and hatch in April before runoff. The parachute BWO is a very effective dry fly pattern when fish are rising in early spring.
- Woolly Bugger – Woolly buggers are a great all-around fly for any time of year and almost any river. They are effective in almost any season and almost any time of day. Stripping and dead drifting woolly buggers through deeper holes and bends in rivers is a great way to catch some big fish.
- Pheasant tail Nymph – Pheasant tail nymphs are a great nymph pattern and work well on almost any river. During the pre-runoff period in early spring fish are mainly feeding on the larvae near the bottom of the river and if you get a pheasant tail nymph down near the bottom where the fish are they have a hard time resisting this pattern.
Pre-runoff fly fishing in Utah is a rewarding experience for both novice and seasoned anglers, offering a chance to catch trout before the waters rise and become more challenging. March and April is a great time of year to come and catch some great fish with mild weather and quiet rivers. We hope to see you soon at Falcon’s Ledge in Utah.
